meine begegnung mit Gianmarco:

Gianmarco und ich begegneten uns an einem lauen Sommerabend in einem Hostel auf Maui. Ehrlich gesagt war ich etwas in mein Essen vertieft und wollte mich gar nicht so sehr unterhalten, aber wer kann bitte schön dem Charme eines Italieners widerstehen haha?  Seine offene und herzliche Art und vor allem sein Englisch, mit einem Hauch von italienischem Akzent, machten es mir so einfach, eine Verbindung aufzubauen. Wir unterhielten uns eine ganze Weile und lachten sehr viel gemeinsam. Irgendwann erzählte Gianmarco, dass er am nächsten Tag unbedingt auf den Vulkan „Haleakala“ fahren möchte und ich ihn gerne begleiten kann, wenn ich Lust hätte. Aber sowas von! Schließlich hatte ich kein Auto und wollte schon so lange den Sonnenuntergang vom Vulkan anschauen. Und so verbrachten wir einen richtig schönen Tag zusammen. Kurz bevor die Sonne unterging, parkte Gianmarco den Jeep so, dass wir uns in den Jeep setzen konnten – geschützt vorm kalten Wind – um den Sonnenuntergang anzuschauen. In dieser wundervollen Atmosphäre entstand dieses Interview und ich bin so dankbar, dass Gianmarco so offen und ehrlich mit mir gesprochen hat. Einer der Tage, die mir für immer in Erinnerung bleiben werden.

Ist es das erste mal, dass du alleine reist?

Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich so viel zu meinem eigenen Vergnügen reise. In den letzten 8 Jahren bin ich aufgrund meiner Arbeit wochenweise allein gereist und habe natürlich auch einige Kurztrips allein unternommen, aber jetzt auf Hawaii bin ich 18 Tage geblieben. Das ist schon etwas anderes.

Was denkst du über das alleine reisen? Gefällt es dir besser, als mit einer anderen Person in den Urlaub zu fahren?

Das kommt darauf an. Ich meine, wenn man allein reist, muss man sich nicht um Andere kümmern. Man kann einfach tun, was man will und wann man will. Und man kann den Zeitplan ändern, ohne jemanden zu fragen, was er davon hält. Das kannst du also einfach tun. Du fühlst dich viel freier. Oder du hast jemanden gefunden, mit dem es sich wirklich lohnt zu reisen, der die gleiche Sichtweise hat, so dass ihr auf die gleiche Art und Weise denkt und ihr manchmal nicht einmal miteinander reden müsst, weil ihr euch einfach sofort versteht. Ansonsten weiß ich, dass ich eines Tages mit meiner zukünftigen Freundin reisen möchte, weil ich das Reisen und das Abenteuer mit jemandem teilen möchte, den ich wirklich liebe. Es ist doch viel schöner, einen Sonnenuntergang mit meiner zukünftigen Freundin zu beobachten als allein. Nicht, weil es nicht gut ist, ihn alleine zu sehen, es ist nur ein bisschen mehr besonders.

Alisia: „Ja, das verstehe ich. Weil man den Moment teilen kann und weiß, dass man denselben besonderen Moment erlebt.“

Wenn ich mir den Sonnenuntergang alleine anschaue, würde ich wahrscheinlich Fotos machen und mit meiner Gopro Zeitrafferaufnahmen machen, und wenn ich mit meiner zukünftigen Freundin zusammen wäre, würde ich einfach reden und den Moment intensiver erleben.

Was war für dich das Beste am Alleinreisen auf dieser Reise?

Das war auf jeden Fall, als ich allein im Polihale State Park auf Kauai geschlafen habe. Ich bin die letzten vier oder fünf Meilen auf dem Sand gefahren, dann dort angekommen und habe mein Zelt und alle meine Sachen für die Nacht aufgebaut. Um 18.20 Uhr war ich mit allem fertig und der Sonnenuntergang war um 18.40 Uhr. Also bin ich einfach zum Strand gelaufen und habe während des Sonnenuntergangs angefangen zu schwimmen. Dies ist der einzige Sonnenuntergang auf dieser Reise, von dem ich keine Bilder oder Videos habe. Es ist der Einzige, an den ich mich wirklich erinnern kann, und es ist wahrscheinlich der beste Sonnenuntergang, den ich je in meinem Leben gesehen habe. Ich glaube also, es ist so etwas wie ein Geschenk, das mir jemand gemacht hat, denn ich habe den Sonnenuntergang wirklich gesehen, es war unglaublich. Ich erinnere mich daran, dass die Sonne groß war. Es gab keine Wolken und die Sonne ging direkt im Wasser unter während ich im offenen Ozean in Kauai schwamm. Das Wasser war ruhig, es gab keine Strömung. Nichts. Es war einfach perfekt. Als ich dann aus dem Wasser stieg, war es draußen superwarm, und ich spürte diese Wärme die ganze Nacht lang. Es war unglaublich. Es war etwas, das ich nicht beschreiben kann. Das war definitiv meine Lieblingsnacht, meine beste Nacht hier auf dieser Reise. Meine beste Erinnerung!

Wenn du noch einmal einen Solotrip machen würdest, welches Land würdest du wählen? Gibt es etwas auf deiner Bucketlist?

Ja, klar! Costa Rica, weil es das nächste Land ist, das ich plane, und ich weiß nicht, ob jemand mitkommen möchte, oder ich würde gerne Asien bereisen, aber für eine längere Zeit. Nicht nur zwei oder drei Wochen. Einfach langsam reisen, sehr langsam. Auf meinem Weg möchte ich viele Leute kennenlernen und tief in die Kultur eintauchen. Ich möchte die Kultur ein bisschen besser kennen lernen, denn auf dieser Reise in Hawaii habe ich zwar viel erlebt und viele Abenteuer bestanden, aber ich musste alles in zwei Wochen unterbringen. Nächstes Mal möchte ich also langsam und ohne Eile reisen, und das ist eine Reise, die ich gerne alleine machen würde. Einfach auch, um zu wachsen. Und ich glaube, es gibt keinen besseren Ort als Asien, um in sich selbst zu schauen und zu wachsen.

Was ist dein Traum vom Leben?

Normalerweise verraten wir in Italien unseren Traum nicht, denn in unserer Kultur wird er nicht wahr, wenn wir ihn verraten, aber ich kann dir sagen, dass er damit zusammenhängt, die beste Version meiner selbst zu finden und natürlich zu reisen. Mein größter Traum ist es also, die Welt zu bereisen, viele Erfahrungen auf der ganzen Welt zu machen und alles zu verändern. Ich habe auf meinem IPhone eine Notiz, die „momento mori“ heißt, was auf Lateinisch „erinnere dich daran, dass du sterben musst“ bedeutet. Viele Leute denken, dass das nach Pech klingt, aber es ist kein Pech, denn wenn dir jemand sagt, dass du daran denken sollst, dass du sterben musst, dann lebst du jeden Tag in vollen Zügen. Du wirst keine Zeit verschwenden, denn wenn du denkst, „oh, meine Zeit ist endlos, ich mache das später“, nein, mach das jetzt! Du weißt nie, was die Zukunft bringt, und du weißt nicht, ob du morgen noch am Leben bist. Das Leben ist kurz.

Gianmarco and I met on a warm summer evening in a hostel on Maui. Honestly, I was a bit engrossed in my food and didn’t want to talk that much, but who can resist the charm of an Italian haha? His open and warm nature and especially his English, with a hint of Italian accent, made it so easy for me to connect. We talked for quite a while and laughed a lot together. At some point, Gianmarco told me that he really wanted to go to the volcano „Haleakala“ and that I was welcome to accompany him. Of course! After all, I had no car and wanted to look at the sunset from the volcano for so long. And so we spent a really nice day together. Just before the sun went down, Gianmarco parked the jeep at a very good spot. He opened the trunk so that we could sit in it – protected from the cold wind – to watch the sunset. In this wonderful atmosphere this interview was made and I am so grateful that Gianmarco talked to me so openly and honestly. One of the days that I will remember forever.

Is it your first time solotraveling?

This is my first time traveling that much for my own pleasure. In the past 8 years, I traveled alone weekly because of my work and of course I did some short trips alone but now in Hawaii, I stayed for 18 days. That’s kind of different.

What do you think about solotraveling? Do you like it more than going on vacation with another person?

It depends. I mean, when you’re solo traveling you don’t have to take care of anyone else, you just do whatever you want, whenever you want. And you can change the schedule without asking anybody,  you just do that. So you feel a lot freer because, if you do the same with somebody else, that it’s not your travel partner with the same point of view,  it’s like carrying a backpack. So, or you found someone worth traveling with who has the same point of view, that sometimes you don’t even need to talk about because you just understand each other immediately, otherwise if you’re looking for a real adventure just travel solo and you’ll meet people on the road. I know for sure one day I’d like to travel with a future girlfriend, someone worthwhile because I really would like to share the travel and the adventure with someone I deeply love. For example, watching a sunset with my future girlfriend would be better than watching it alone. Not because watching alone is not good, it’d be just a little bit more.

Alisia: “Yes, I get that. Because you can share the moment and you know that you experience the same special moment.”

When watching the sunset alone, I probably would take pictures and do timelapse with my GoPro, but if I would have been with my girlfriend, for example, I would just talk and live the moment more deeply.

What was your best part of solotraveling on this trip?

It was definitely when I slept alone in Polihale State Park in Kauai. I drove the last four or five miles on the sand and then I arrived there and set up my tent and all my stuff for the night. I was done with everything around 6.20 pm and the sunset was around 6.40 pm. So I just walked to the beach and started swimming during the sunset. This is the only sunset during this trip that I don’t have any pictures or videos of. It’s the only one I can remember in my mind and it’s probably the best sunset I saw in my life. So I think it’s something like a gift that you know someone was giving to me because I was really watching the sunset and enjoying it, was just incredible. I remember in my mind that the sun was big. There were no clouds and the sun set straight into the water and I was swimming in an open ocean in Kauai. The water was calm, there wasn’t any current. Nothing. It was simply perfect. And then I get out of the water and the temperature outside was super warm and I felt this warmness all night long. It was amazing. It was something that I don’t know how to describe. So that was definitely my favorite night, my best night here on this trip. My best memory!

If you would go on a solotrip again which country would you choose? Is there something on your bucketlist?

Yeah, sure! Costa Rica because it’s the next one that I’m planning and I don’t know if someone wants to join the trip. I also would like to travel to Asia for a long time. Not like two or three weeks. I’d like to travel slowly, very slowly. Get to know a lot of people on my way and I want to dive deep into the culture. So get to know the culture a little bit better because on this trip I did a lot of things and had a lot of adventures but I had to concentrate on everything in two weeks. So next time slow traveling with no rush and that’s a trip that I would like to do alone. Just to grow, as well. And I think there is no better place than Asia to look inside yourself and grow.

What is your dream of life?

So usually in Italy, we don’t reveal our dream because in our culture if we reveal our dream, it’s not gonna happen but I can tell you that it’s related to finding the best version of myself and of course travel. So my biggest dream is definitely to travel the world, making a lot of experiences all over the world and all different. I have on my iPhone the note which is called “memento mori” in Latin it means “remember that you have to die”. Which is a lot of people think that it sounds like bad luck but it’s not bad luck, because if someone tells you to „remember that you have to die“, you live every day to the fullest. You’re not gonna waste any time because if you think “oh my time is endless, I do that later” No. Do that now! You never know what the future holds and you don’t know if you’re still alive tomorrow. Life is short and it’s now!
