Ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, wie sehr ich auf diesen Tag hin gefiebert habe, Freunde der Sonne und des Universums. Ich bin schon ganz aufgeregt, denn endlich werde ich an meinem allerersten Beach-Clean-Up auf Hawaii teilnehmen. Ich freue mich wirklich so sehr, einfach nur, weil wieder Mal ein großer Traum von mir wahr wird. Es gibt nichts Schöneres, als seiner Leidenschaft nachzugehen und das dann auch noch auf Hawaii. Juhu!
Sharkastics, who’s that?
Nachdem ich im Wildlife Discovery Center erfahren habe, welche Organisationen auf Maui Beach-Clean-Ups anbieten, habe ich mich natürlich gleich auf die Suche gemacht. Es hat nur wenige Klicks gedauert, bis ich eine Organisation gefunden habe: Sharkastics. Das Datum und der Ort passten, denn da ich kein Mietauto mehr hatte, war ich auf das schreckliche und nicht wirklich gut ausgebaute Bussystem hier angewiesen.
Über die Organisation:
Seit 2003 setzt sich „Sharkastics“ für die Bekämpfung des Meeresmülls ein. Ganz nach dem Motto „The choices we make today will impact our planet tomorrow. How will you choose?” organisieren sie nicht nur regelmäßige Beach-Clean-Ups, sondern leisten auf ihrer Website auch ganz viel Aufklärungsarbeit. Aber warum ausgerechnet dieser Name wirst du dich mit Sicherheit fragen.
Hier kommt die Antwort:
Da immer mehr Müll die Meere und Küsten der Welt überflutet, werden die Organisation zunehmend auf das Phänomen des von Tieren angebissenen Plastiks („sharkastics“) aufmerksam. SHARKastics werden häufig bei ihren Müllsäuberungsaktionen auf Hawaii gefunden, und deshalb wollen sie ihre weltweite Verbreitung, also wo kommt der Müll her, bestimmen. Um mehr Informationen zu sammeln und die Auswirkungen dieses Problems auf das Überleben der Meerestiere zu bewerten, haben sie ihre Website eingerichtet.

Endlich geht’S los!
Um 9 Uhr traf ich am besagten Treffpunkt am Ka’ehu Beach ein. Diese Bucht und der Küstenstreifen sind für viele Meerestiere wichtig, wie ich später erfuhr. Jedes Jahr wird dort immer mehr Müll angeschwemmt, deshalb ist die Organisation für jede Unterstützung dankbar. Bisher wurden mehr als 28 Tonnen Müll aus dem Meer entfernt. Mal schauen, wie viel wir heute sammeln werden.
Ich wurde direkt von Cheryl empfangen, die das Herz von Sharkastic ist. Sie freute sich total, dass jemand vom anderen Ende der Welt gekommen ist, um zu helfen. Wie sehr ich mich freute, konnte sie, glaub ich, mehr als deutlich am breiten Grinsen in meinem Gesicht sehen.
Wir waren eine kleine Gruppe von sechs Personen. Ich schnappte mir einen Eimer und Handschuhe und los ging’s.
plastik über plastik
Zuerst begutachtete ich den Strand und war erstaunt, wie „sauber“ er zu sein schien. Cheryl erklärte mir, dass es schon Jahre gab, wo sie an diesem Strand auf Plastik gelaufen sind und der Tag heute ein guter Tag sei, weil weniger Plastik zu sehen ist, als normalerweise. Nach nur 15 Minuten befanden sich in meinem Eimer schon die ersten Plastikteile. Ich konnte es wirklich kaum glauben, wie viele kleine Plastikteile sich im Sand befanden, aber auch unter angeschwemmten Holzteilen.
Es war alles dabei: Plastikstrohhalme, Aluminiumdeckel von unterschiedlichen Erfrischungsgetränken und kleine Fischernetzreste. Was wir außerdem fanden? Ein großes Styroporteil, deutlich angebissen von einem Fisch! Sowas habe auch ich noch nicht gesehen. Ich war total in meinem Element und hätte noch Ewigkeiten weitersammeln können, aber nach gut zweieinhalb Stunden in der prallen Sonne beendeten wir unsere Aktion und begutachteten unsere Ausbeute.
Jetzt hieß es erstmal alles sortieren. Beim Sortieren wurde mir deutlich, wieviel wir eingesammelt haben und das sich wirklich manche Teile auf einem langen Weg befanden bevor sie hier an der Küste von Maui angespült worden sind. Ist das nicht verrückt?!
Insgesamt sammelten wir 1.203 Gegenstände auf und kamen damit auf fast 30 kg. Absolut stolz und voller Endorphine bedankte ich mich bei der ganzen Gruppe für dieses spannende und ereignisreiche Erlebnis. Ich konnte endlich mal einen klitzekleinen Beitrag leisten, um diesen wunderschönen Strandabschnitt auf Hawaii vom Müll zu befreien. On top wurde ich dann auch noch nach Hause gefahren. Was für ein Tag!!!
was sonst noch geschah…
Ein paar Tage zuvor, als ich noch mein Mietauto hatte, beschloss ich ganz spontan, nochmal alleine auf den Vulkan hochzufahren. Mein Bedürfnis, dort oben erneut den Sonnenuntergang anzugucken, war so stark, dass ich ihm nachgeben wollte. Und so fuhr ich die kurvige Straße wieder nach oben und hielt dieses Mal am Visitorcenter an, um mir gemeinsam mit all den anderen Touristen das Spektakel anzuschauen.
Ich suchte mir einen guten Spot aus. Nach und nach kamen immer mehr Menschen. Manche waren besser vorbereitet als ich, wer hätte das gedacht, haha. Mit Campingstühlen, einer großen Thermoskanne Tee und dicken Decken machten sie es sich gemütlich. Und ich? Ich versuchte mich mit leichtem Auf- und aAbhüpfen warm zu halten, da ich nur einen Pulli trug. Typisch ich!
Aber als so langsam die Sonne unterging, vergaß ich die Kälte ein wenig. Wie schön kann ein Sonnenuntergang über den Wolken bitte sein, Freunde der Sonne und des Universums? Jedes Mal wieder fängt mein Herz ganz arg an zu schlagen und ich kann nicht aufhören zu grinsen. Das ist so ein Moment, in dem ich spüre, wie sehr ich im jetzigen Moment bin. Kein Gedankenkarussell an Vergangenes oder Zukünftiges. Einfach nur die Magie und ich…ein absoluter Marmeladenglasmoment!
lieblingsbeschäftigung: blogartikel schreiben
Ansonsten vertrieb ich mir die Tage mit viel Blogartikel schreiben in meinem neuen Lieblingscafé, nicht weit vom Hostel entfernt. Ich merkte schnell, wie das Schreiben in einem Café mich beflügelte und mir unfassbar viel Spaß machte.
Tja und dann hieß es am 30. September Abschied nehmen von Maui. Ehrlich gesagt fiel es mir dieses Mal gar nicht so schwer, denn diese Insel war, aufgrund der vielen Vorkommnisse, doch etwas belastet. Deshalb war meine Vorfreude riesig auf mein nächstes Abenteuer: sieben Tage Kauai.

gedanken der letzten zeit:
Während ich fleißig Plastikmüll am Strand sammelte, gab es diesen einen Moment. Ich hielt kurz inne, schaute in meinen Eimer und dann schweifte mein Blick langsam über den langen Strand. Ich merkte sofort, wie mir ein paar Tränen hochkamen. Warum? Weil ich merkte, dass ich gerade genau das mache, was ich so sehr liebe. Ich ging meiner Leidenschaft nach und nicht nur das. Ich erfüllte mir einen absoluten Herzenswunsch. Ich war so erfüllt in diesem Moment, dass ich mir schwor, niemals damit aufzuhören. Niemals damit aufzuhören, meiner Leidenschaft nachzugehen, meine Träume zu verfolgen und nicht aufzugeben, sondern immer daran zu glauben, dass alles möglich ist.
my first beach-clean-up

I can’t tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to this day, friends of the sun and the universe. I am so excited because I will finally be participating in my very first Beach-Clean-Up in Hawaii. I am really so excited, simply because once again a big dream of mine is coming true.
There is nothing better than following your passion and then also in Hawaii. Yay!
sharkastics, who’s that?
After learning at the Wildlife Discovery Center which organizations offer beach clean-ups on Maui, I naturally went looking right away. It only took a few clicks before I found one organization: Sharkastics. The date and the place fit, because since I didn’t have a rental car anymore, I had to rely on the terrible and not really well developed bus system here.
About the organization:
Since 2003, „Sharkastics“ has been working to combat marine debris. True to the motto „The choices we make today will impact our planet tomorrow. How will you choose?“ they not only organize regular beach-clean-ups, but also do a lot of educational work on their website. But why this name, of all names, you will surely ask yourself.
Here comes the answer:
As more and more trash floods the world’s oceans and coasts, the organization is becoming increasingly aware of the phenomenon of plastic bitten by animals („sharkastics“). SHARKastics are often found during their trash cleanups in Hawaii, so they want to determine their global distribution, where the trash is coming from. To gather more information and assess the impact of this problem on the survival of marine life, they have created their website.

finally here we go!
At 9 am I arrived at the meeting point at Ka’ehu Beach. This bay and the coastal strip are important for many marine animals, as I learned later. Every year more and more garbage is washed up there, so the organization is grateful for any support. So far, more than 28 tons of garbage have been removed from the sea. Let’s see how much we will collect today.
I was welcomed directly by Cheryl, who is the heart of Sharkastic. She was totally happy that someone from the other side of the world came to help. How happy I was, I think she could see more than clearly from the big grin on my face.
We were a small group of six. I grabbed a bucket and gloves and off we went.
Plastic over plastic
First I surveyed the beach and was amazed at how „clean“ it appeared to be. Cheryl explained to me that there have been years where they have walked on plastic on this beach and that today was a good day because there was less plastic than normal. After only 15 minutes, there were already the first pieces of plastic in my bucket. I really couldn’t believe how many small plastic pieces were in the sand, but also under washed up wood pieces.
There was everything: plastic straws, aluminum lids from different soft drinks and small pieces of fishing nets. What else did we find? A large piece of styrofoam, clearly bitten by a fish! Even I have not seen anything like that before. I was totally in my element and could have continued collecting for ages, but after a good two and a half hours in the blazing sun we finished our action and examined our spoils.
Now it was time to sort everything. While sorting, it became clear to me how much we had collected and that some parts had really been on a long journey before they washed up here on the coast of Maui. Isn’t that crazy!
In total, we collected 1,203 items and came up with almost 30 kg. Absolutely proud and full of endorphins, I thanked the whole group for this exciting and eventful experience. I was finally able to make a tiny contribution to freeing this beautiful stretch of beach in Hawaii from trash. On top of that, I also got a ride home. What a day!!!
what else happened…
A few days earlier, when I still had my rental car, I spontaneously decided to drive up to the volcano again alone. My need to look at the sunset up there again was so strong that I wanted to give in to it. And so I drove up the winding road again and stopped this time at the visitor center to watch the spectacle together with all the other tourists.
I picked out a good spot. Little by little more and more people came. Some were better prepared than me, who would have thought, haha. With camping chairs, a big thermos of tea and thick blankets, they made themselves comfortable. And me? I tried to keep warm by lightly bouncing up and down, since I was only wearing a sweater. Typical me!
But as the sun set so slowly, I forgot the cold a little. How beautiful can a sunset over the clouds be, friends of the sun and the universe? Every time again, my heart starts beating really hard and I can’t stop grinning. This is one of those moments when I feel how much I am in the present moment. No carousel of thoughts about the past or the future. Just the magic and me…an absolute „jam jar moment“!
favorite activity: Writing blog articles
Otherwise, I passed the days with a lot of blog article writing in my new favorite café, not far from the hostel. I quickly realized how writing in a café gave me wings and was incredibly fun. I enjoyed it so much!!
Well, and then it was time to say goodbye to Maui on the 30th of september. To be honest, it wasn’t that hard for me this time, because this island was, due to the many incidents, a bit burdened. Therefore, my anticipation was huge for my next adventure: seven days of Kauai.

thoughts of the last times:
While I was diligently collecting plastic trash on the beach, there was this one moment. I paused briefly, looked into my bucket, and then my gaze slowly drifted over the long beach. I immediately noticed a few tears welling up. Why? Because I realized I was doing exactly what I love to do so much. I was pursuing my passion and not only that. I was fulfilling an absolute desire of my heart. I was so fulfilled in that moment that I promised to never stop. Never to stop pursuing my passion, pursuing my dreams and not giving up, but always believing that anything is possible.
